Domestic transport remains the largest emitter of GHGs (28% of total UK emissions), according to the UK Government’s latest annual GHG emissions report. However, this wasn’t always the case.
We looked at the trajectory of sectoral emissions from 1990 which shows how electricity and industry emissions used to dominate, but good progress on decarbonisation (e.g. significant investment in renewables) means that the transport and buildings sectors have moved into the lead.
These sectors are much more consumer-centric and so interventions are often more complex than when dealing mainly with large corporations. We know a lot of consumer-facing businesses already making a big difference in this space but the need for clear policy, delivered effectively, and a supportive tax / funding environment is paramount.
