Fun Fact

char.gy was founded by Richard Stobart after he became frustrated by the lack of charge points for London’s residents and pioneered the concept of using existing street lighting to charge his new EV.

The Challenge

Char.gy was at an inflexion point: having identified its market and proved its technology, the business was entering rapid scale-up mode. A new CEO had been asked by the Board to structure and lead the next phase of the company’s growth, taking over from the founder. To this point, no one had spent much time debating, confirming or writing down a longer-term strategy for the business: what exactly were its ambitions, priorities, necessary resources, targets etc. This was our challenge.

Our Approach (We...)

  • Crafted (new) core principles: Mission, Vision, Priorities, Values as underpin to planning process.
  • Established an organising framework as a foundation to debate, decision-making and communication.
  • Embedded Sustainability (ESG) in all strategic dialogue, resulting plans and narrative.
  • Developed strategic options to accelerate growth, efficiency or commercial performance.
  • Facilitated a 2-day Board offsite to debate and agree plans, execution timescales and targets.

What was different

  • Avoided the pitfalls of too many large corporate strategy processes (you know the ones), instead energising collective problem solving by management and Board.
  • Resulted in a series of pragmatic, achievable plans with designated accountabilities.
  • As well as being of high commercial value to char.gy, we had fun!

Results

  • Unifying narrative across the whole business – transformed understanding and clear communication.
  • Sustainability front and centre of value case for all stakeholders; leadership in decarbonisation.
  • Business is a confirmed leader in its market with clear development plans and options.
  • Nick installed as fractional Chief Sustainability Officer for foreseeable future to progress char.gy’s long-term (sustainable) strategy, which is heavily underpinned by its ambitious role in the net zero transition.

What they had to say:

Perigon was excellent in facilitating a comprehensive strategic planning exercise for us, including fully integrating sustainability considerations and undertaking a detailed materiality assessment. They also brought insight and rigour in guiding our B Corp application. Our Board and Executive team has hugely valued the Perigon team's expertise, pragmatism and guidance.
