Fun Fact

When Hampden & Co. launched in 2015, it was the first new UK private bank in about 30 years.

The Challenge

In 2022, Hampden & Co. was on track to deliver its inaugural profit after 7 years of operation, marking the end of its first strategic horizon. We partnered with Hampden’s Chief Commercial Officer and the wider leadership and senior team to develop a sustainable strategy for their next horizon, exploring challenges such as human vs. digital, societal impact, disruptive trends in UK financial services, and standing out for the right reasons in a crowded market.

Our Approach (We...)

  • Started with the big picture – understanding Hampden’s role in the economy, society and planet.
  • Used this to underpin a genuinely holistic strategy refresh process.
  • Iterated with a group of their best thinkers (hierarchy agnostic), leadership and board.
  • Pioneered a new way of quantitively exploring client behaviours and characteristics with unexpected results.
  • Developed a practical and communicable strategic framework and set of prioritised plans.

What was different

  1. Identified and worked with people who were curious and driven, not (just) those already in leadership roles.
  2. Considered societal impact and the planet in the same breath as commercials – not as an afterthought.
  3. Facilitated genuine debate and challenge sessions at Board, rather than giving them the answers.
  4. Built frameworks and plans with a multi-year view and flexibility, not trying to do everything at once.

Results

  • New strategy inspiring Board confidence and employee motivation.
  • De-prioritisation of projects to reduce stretch and safeguard what was assessed to really matter most.
  • Hampden continues to pass scale and profitability milestones.

What they had to say:

"Perigon Partners has worked with us on three separate engagements over the last year [(2022/3 to mid 2024)], to help us formulate our sustainability strategy, to provide a detailed review and refinement of our overall corporate strategy, and most recently by performing data-driven analysis of our existing client book to identify segmentation opportunities. Perigon’s input has been consistently thoughtful, incisive and pragmatic, and their senior-level financial services industry experience has proven invaluable. I have no hesitation in recommending them.”
